DS> THIS IS DAVID SMITH OF TROOP 56 AND I HAVE SOME IDEAS FOR NEW MERIT
DS> BADGES. FIRST CREATIVE WRITING IN WHICH YOU WRITE STORIES AND ALL,
DS> SECOND CHESS. THIRD BIOLOGY, FOURTH PHYSICS. IF ANY OF YOU CAN HELP
DS> DEVELOP THE BADGES PLEASE WRITE.
First, David, I request that you refrain from using all upper case
letters as it gives the impression that you are shouting at us.
Thanks. And now on with the badge ideas.
For creative writing there should be a variety of forms of writing
included, but not necessarily all required. Involvement in the
creation of a book or journal is activity that should be included, and
possibly also a newsletter submission of some sort.
For chess I would think this to be more difficult. The Scout must show
sustained interest in the activity and have participated in group
activities such as a school chess club or tournament play.
Biology and physics ... these are very broad. Perhaps a badge in these
areas in general is not wise, but rather badges in specific aspects of
them. If you look at the existing badge program you will find evidence
of biology and physics already there in abundance. Be careful, too,
that Scouting does not become a duplication of school. Rather it
should be an extention of school, or better put it should encourage
life-long learning. Scouting is a hands on, get your hands dirty,
practical sort of education (though I certainly do not overlook the
values aspect). Remember KIS-MIF ... Keep It Simple - Make It Fun.
