JD>If there is more than one punishment, then isn't that double jepordy?
No -- double jeopardy refers to being
tried for the same crime more than once.
Say you shoot some guy and the state
brings you trial for second degree murder.
You're found not guilty. The state cannot
bring you back to trial for manslaughter
in the same case -- you've already been
tried and found not guilty.
There is often more than one punishment for
a crime. If you kill somebody while DUI,
you can go to jail, lose your driver's
license, and be forced to pay compensation
to the relatives of the deceased.
