In a message dated 08-20-95, Bill Grimsley said to Michael Raiteri:
BG>Is that 14400/V34 or 14400/V32 though? It is not inconceivable that your ISP
BG> is running a bank of say 14k4s on one rotary number, and a
BG>bank of 28k8s on another line, although I'd still be very
BG>surprised if that was the case.
Its 14400/V32. The ISP is running a bank of modems alright but they are all
28800 and are a combination of Maestro, Microcom and Banksia. This wil all
change on the 5th Sept when my ISP moves to a new location with all brand new
Maestro 28800 modems and new (hopefully) less noisy lines. The present lines to
the ISP are _very_ bad according to the sysop there. Anyway I'll wait and see
what the 5th brings.
MB> I wish they would reply to my email as to what types of modems they are
MR> using.
BG>No good pointing the finger until you find out for sure, either.
Well I found out from my ISP but the BBS just won't reply (six messages posted
now). Off hand I would say it might be a Maestro or Banksia. BTW as a matter of
interest Dynalink support have finally agreed that my problems with connects are
_not_ my phone lines but possible incompatability with a certain type/types of
modem. When they tried to ring the BBS they couldn't get a connect at all, just
repeated negotiation (the same as I have with my ISP). An attempt using the
older 28800 Rockwell based Dynalink proved successful _every_ time. So Dynalink
are very keen to know what type of modem the BBS has. The BBS is QUANTUM LEAP
ph 07 3805-1180.
Anyone got any info on what modem is on Node 2 there. I just can't get a reply
from the sysop.
BG>If you're seeing /ARQ connects, and not being tossed off,
BG>neither of the above will make any difference in your case
BG>anyway.
I'm seeing /ARQ connects alright but monly for 25 seconds :(
BG>No thanks, I'm pretty choosy about where I work. :)
I don't blame you.
MR> Hmmm &m4 would allow that as well. I've since changed to &M5.
BG>Probably not a bad idea, as your modem will then drop
BG>carrier if an /ARQ connect is not negotiated.
MR> lastly could you confirm that S15=128 does disable V42
MR> detect phase and not disable V42 entirely.
BG>Tom says that S15=136 is required for that, and as I don't
BG>have a Dynalink to test, I can't confirm it either way.
BG>I'd take his word for it though.
MR> The modem online help for the S registers has S15=128 - disable V42
BG>And S15=8 disables MNP handshake, does it not? Sounds like
BG>both commands are required to force a non-negotiated LAPM
BG>connect then (ask Tom).
Dynalink couldn't shed any light on it. Their support reckon they have never
had the need to disable the V42 detect phase.
Correct me if I'm wrong but
doesn't the courier have two separate S27 registers for disabling V42 and V42b
detect phase - S27=48 disable V42 detect phase and S27=64 disable V42.
With the Dynalink the modems built in help has _no_ S registers which state
"Disable V42 detect phase". S15=128 is "Disable V42"
no mention of it being
Detect phase.
I posted a note in USR_MODEM so hopefully someone with new V34+ sportster6 might
be able to shed some light on it.
Cheers
Mike
