I'm not a bird watcher either, but like you say, it's hard to ignore them.

They're not pretty to look at, and they are kind of mean to other birds,
but their song is so complex and cool, no two have exactly the same song. 
Brown Thrashers kind of have the same "theme" (mimicking other
sounds/calls), but not as complex or long.

I don't see many owls, but hawks and eagles plenty of them, even bald
eagles are not so rare these days.  I never saw one before I moved here. 
Turkey buzzards are excellent in the air, aren't they, though rounding a
curve into a flock of just taking flight buzzards can be quite
disconcerting.   (the only thing you can see is feathers and
wings!)

I used to see more hummingbirds in Cheyenne -- they just don't frequent
where I'm at here. :(

I saw more Carolina Wrens this year than ever before. Less cardinals, but
they kind of ebb and flow...

LOL, no not me.  I hear there are bobcats around here.  I've seen wild
boar, bears, and foxes, but none of the cats. (other than stray domestics!)
