WITNESSES IN JENNIFER WILCOX SEX-ABUSE SCANDAL RETRACT ACCUSATIONS;
CLAIM POLICE COERCION
Twelve-year-old Incarcerated in Juvenile Detention Center
Cresskill, NJ, November 27 -- After more than a decade, three key witnesses
have come forward in the Jennifer Wilcox case to describe coercive police
interrogations that even culminated in the incarceration of two brothers
in a juvenile detention center and a police holding cell.  Their testimony
was instrumental in convicting Jenny Wilcox [now] 35, and Robert Aldridge,
[now] age 31, for engaging in a wide variety of coercive sexual acts with
six children in their apartment house complex in Dayton, Ohio, in July
and August 1984.  They have been imprisoned in [the] State of Ohio since
1985.  A new hearing is scheduled for February 13, 1996 in Dayton, Ohio.
Ohio's equivalent of California's McMartin case, North Carolina's
Rascals case, and New Jersey's Kelly Michael's case, they were convicted
on the testimony of children interviewed by local police.
The witnesses--three brothers then 12, 10, and 8 years old--repeatedly
denied to the investigator being sexually abused by Wilcox or Aldridge.
The police investigators then handcuffed the 12-year-old boy and
detained him in a juvenile detention center for refusing to "cooperate."
He was told he would stay there until he provided an accusation.  His
10-year-old brother was then also questioned and put in a holding cell
in the police station after he, too, denied being molested.  He was also
told he would be transferred to the juvenile detention center if he did
not provide an accusation.  The eight-year-old boy was similarly
threatened and told about what happened to his brothers when they refused
to describe sex abuse.  All three ultimately provided accusations.
All These Facts Are Confirmed in the Investigator's Report of Oct. 2, 1984
Richard A. Gardner, M.D., a nationally recognized child psychiatrist who
has evaluated hudreds of sex cases, interviewed Wilcox and Aldridge in
prison last month.  He states:  "I found no evidence for pedophilic
tendencies in either of them in the course of my detailed examinations.
These accusations arose in the context of group hysteria that pervaded
their apartment complex prior to the sex-abuse accusations."
This case not only describes the kinds of coercive interrogation
techniques that are coming to public attention in recent months but
is also a dramatic example of prosecutorial and police misconduct.
