Inge, fire up the boiler and get lots of boiling water ready, then
shovel the top off the anthills, one at a time, and pour in the
boiling water. (Do one completely before doing next, or you'll be up
to your eyeballs in furious ants!)
Ants normally situate in dry sandy soil. I'd also suggest adding a
fair amount of compost or other humus-y material to that site to hold
moisture, which will encourage your plants and discourage your ants at
the same time.
