GG> BTW, what is a price of 300B in USA?
I'll need to check the next time I'm at a magazine
stand. I remember my shock over seeing the prices
more than the actual prices.
GG> Can You explain in more details about your amp?
GG> What is current and voltage of output tubes?
Remember I'm not very electrically oriented, and
the manufacturer has little technical documentation.
Its single ended parallel, pure class A, zero
feedback (but can be added), and can be bridged
into a mono amp. Everyone is happy with the
Sovtek 5881s (3 per channel), and its fronted
by 2 6SN7GTBs, which most people upgrade as I've
said before. Biasing it to anything below 635
to 640mV (manufacturers recommend max) results
in poor performance, which has also resulted in
alot of units on the used-market from owners who
don't want to deal with it.
But that brings up the biggest downfall of the
amp: the biasing pots are built into the BOTTOM
of the chassis. Having to disconnect and turn it
upside down is a real pain every 3 months. But
its like getting a new amp after properly biasing
it!
GG> Which size of output transformer, and especially size of the steel?
No idea, its fully enclosed. Though I hear the
builder makes their own. The unit is pretty
attractive, with a very clean look with the
tubes exposed in the front 2/3s and the enclosed
transformer in back.
SM> I'm considering either buying a second amp, and bi-amping
SM> or monoblocking the two, or getting a factory upgraded
SM> transformer. A used amp is only slightly more than the
SM> factory upgrade, but I can't decide!
GG> What crossover do you plan to use?
Haven't researched it yet, and this is what is making
me shy away from a second amp because I realize this
would be very important. The speakers call for a 500hz
crossover, and I'm afraid of messing up the sound. A
second of the same type can be run mono, but other
owners say it looses some of the 'magic'. I can't borrow
a second amp from the dealer, since they went out of
business. Since it already plays plenty loud for me, and
I'm in need of more bass control than more sound pressure,
I'm leaning towards the transformer upgrade which people
are saying improves the bass control.
GG> It's a pity I don't have access to Internet.
GG> In Russia we have two audio related echos SU.HARDW.AUDIO and MO.HI-FI.
Very much so. By the way, how did your little amp
do with the, Mirages 290s was it?
