I read recently that the ban on married priests only dates from what we
call the Dark Ages.  Seems at the time the church was one of the biggest
property holders in western civilization, and if a married priest died chances
were that his church, its fixtures and any other assets would go to his heirs
rather than stay in the church.  So the church eliminated the possibility of
heirs breaking up its property holdings.
