The original series was a collection of eight short stories written for
ASTOUNDING magazine between 1942 and 1950. The first four and a new
"prequel"
story were published as "Foundation". The remaining stories were
published in
pairs as "Foundation and Empire" and "Second Foundation".

Then in 1981 Asimov was persuaded to write "Foundation's Edge"
and follow that
up a couple years later with "Foundation and Earth". Five years after
"Foundation and Earth" Ike came out with a set or prequels to the now huge
series "Prelude to Foundation" and "Forward The
Foundation"  which tied the
whole thing up with his "I ROBOT" stories and the
"Empire" series.

Since then (and after Asmiov's death) the series/concept has become a cottage
industry. There are even some who claim that Osama Bin Laden named Al Qaeda
what he did because that is the Arabic for foundation.

Paul Krugman (Nobel laureate in 2008) credits the series with turning his mind
to economics as the closest existing science to psychohistory (Seldon's big
deal).
