  They may have added front end blocking to deal with the crushing blow of
millions of unthrottled bots blasting their spam and viruses.   Some sort
of blacklists, possibly combined with greylisting would have greatly
reduced the load to be analyzed and filtered, resulting in fewer in your
sinbox.
