I wanted to stick those +9Dbi extra long antennas onto my old WRT54G and
see how that improved my signal. But, I moved and now have my router at the
top of an open stairwell and get excellent coverage.

I have a FONera router for hopping on the FON network and sharing my
bandwidth on their network. They sell cheap routers and directional
antennas, you might find something worthwhile for cheap there.
