But its a dog that was recently bought from a breeder, and we paid $800 for
it and she had a real f*cked up legal agreement, trade the dog for another
dog and wonder if the puppy we surrendered got the care it needed.

That is why I suggest the idea of if the dog you buy from a breeder has any
birth defects or serious medical problems you can reclaim 50% of what you
paid for the animal for its medical costs. And the breeder can reclaim the
cost of the puppy/kitten exam if the vet failed to find the hernia or heart
murmur.
