In theory, the best you should get is 19200 bps from your serial port. 
19.2 kbps modems are hard to come by so you'd best try for a 14400.  If you
are friendly with your shop keepher, take your machine (or serial card) to
the shop and try it on a 28.8 kbps.  In my experiene, the old ports didn't
work reliably at 38400 or above.

You could also try upgrading your serial card (very cheap these days.)
