Hello Dan.

Okay,

First, you can log in as root with root's password, if your distro still
allows this, or you can type "sudo command" and when asked,
supply your own
password, or you can type either su or su - and then enter root's password ...

I create a directory "irex" in the home directory of the user
that runs the
rest of the FidoNet system, in my case usually "mbse" and group
"bbs"
I unzip the irexl zip file using "unzip -L irexl229.zip" in the
irex directory

Then change ownership of all files as follows;

chown mbse:bbs /opt/mbse/irex

chmod + rwx /opt/mbse/irex/irexl
chmod + rwx /opt/mbse/irex/irexcfgl

This should make both these files execuatble ...

or you can select these files in "mc" and then press F9 then
select "Files"
option on the menu bar, then select chown/chmod on the drop down menu ... ,
this might be easier ...

If irex complains about a missing "termcap" file copy the one in the irex
directory to /etc/ ...

Also I have found that irex does not like being called from the path, and the
only way to run it is to change to the irex directory, and then run it ... , I
don't understand why this is so, ...

It is not the "Linux way" but the way Charles chose to package
the program ...
