Noticed two recent messages on the Parental Alienation Syndrome (Christopher
Baker to Bob Hirschfeld (January 22, 1996 - PAS in the news) and Rick Thoma
to Christopher Baker (January 23, same subject).
For the most part, sexual abuse allegations in the context of divorce were
identified in a 1987 paper "Sexual Allegations in Divorce - The SAID
yndrome"
by Ross and Blush; generally related to child custody litigation and child
access/visitation areas. I still have an original draft provided by the au-
thors.
The Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, along with the American
ar
Association (and others), sponsored what was called the Abuse Allegation Pro-
ject in 1986. The project, led by AFCC researchers Thoennes and Pearson, re-
sulted in numerous papers and finally "SEXUAL ABUSE ALLEGATIONS IN CUSTODY
ND
VISITATION CASES: A Resource Book for Judges and Court Personnel" (National
Legal Resource Center for Child Advocacy and Protection: February 1988, ISBN
0-09707-358-4, American Bar Association).
At the time many special interest groups and private citizens provided input
to Thoennes and Pearson. This included VOCAL (before NASVO was created, and
other subsequent splits which occurred). To make a long story short, the pro-
ject was done by-the-system-for-the-system and none of our input/concerns ap-
peared anywhere.
While the Ross and Blush paper was first published in a county bar newsletter
in Michigan, it was also published, interestingly enough, in a newsletter of
the AFCC (co-sponsor of the Abuse Allegation Project) and did not appear in
the ABA's publication. The paper and authors were given a slight mention but
nothing really positive. The ABA, under E. Bruce Nicholson, choose to cite
over a dozen previously published papers and their authors.
About the same time, 1987, Dr. Gardner cited his work on the Parental Aliena-
tion Syndrome relating it mainly to child custody litigation. I have 85 to 90
references on Dr. Gardner which will be posted in the near future. These are
what I have on the Parental Alienation Syndrome:
