-=> Quoting Sondra Ball to Robin Arnhold <=-
Hi, Sondra,
SB> I've been following the flooding in the northern plains. The last I
SB> heard, some rivers have reached heights not seen for 500 years; and
SB> the waters are still rising.
SB>
SB> Question: how do they know how high a flood was 500 years ago anyway?
It may have been mentioned in the histories of the peoples living there
at the time or there may be core soil samples with a layer of
water-deposited silt.
SB> But it is spring. About a third of the trees here in South Jersey are
SB> in leaf now. The buttonwood outside my window is among them.
Spring is very reluctant around here this year. One day the temperatures
will be near normal, but then it turns cold and windy again. The other
night it got down to 27. Some of the vegetation is behind by as much as
two weeks, but it is coming along. The tree in front of the house is
starting to leaf out a bit. It is always the last tree around to leaf
out and last year still hadn't leafed out at the beginning of June.
Around here we are thinking that it will go from this type of weather
into full summer with no transition.
Take care,
Robin
