subject: win32 console text editor recommendations?

I do a lot of editing in command prompt consoles in Windows XP - mostly old
offline readers, but some editing of BBS configs and formatting text files for
the BBS with fixed margins. I use an old version of QEDIT for DOS.

Windows 2000 used to have support for OS/2 binaries, and Qedit for OS/2 ran
like a charm. Qedit for DOS under Windows XP? Not so much. It's a resource hog,
and causes other windows to hesitate.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a freeware or open source 32-bit
console-based text editor? I have tried Vim, and while I like it for editing
configurations, it's not my first choice as a word processor.

Cheers,
