Hello :)

 - Buy a 14400 baud modem if you only intend using it for email and
FidoNet.(anything of a lower speed is a waste of money i.e. 2400,9600)
 - Buy a 28800 or 33600 modem if you intend using it on the Internet for
downloading files and browsing web pages.
 - To explain the technical workings of a modem is better explained by
reading the manual that will come with your new modem!-)
 - You will need appropriate software to use the modem depending on what
you intend using it for.
