-- Quoting Sharon Mccormick to Charles Angelich about The power of millions --

    --8<--cut

CA> The arrangement is killing FIDO - no control over
CA> moderators. 8(

SM> That's a shame, really. I have found answers to questions
SM> more rapidly by asking in a fido echo than asking in a
SM> newsgroup.

FIDO can be an inexaustible source of information - true.

SM> Being a good moderator is not an easy task. I've dropped
SM> FIDO echoes when I found that not only are the posters rude
SM> and offensive, so is the moderator.

It's the only option but it really cuts down on participation
    after awhile. 8(

SM> But I've also kept echoes where the moderator adheres to
SM> general rules regarding vulgarity and flaming, and is
SM> flexible enough to allow a certain amount of off topic
SM> chattering. To me, that makes a good echo.

There are a few like that - about 2/3 or more of the echos I
access have been as you describe.

SM> Usenet is just not moderated at all, and way to many people
SM> use the excuse of anonimity to be really, really offensive!!

I don't access usenet but I can imagine. It would make a
    serious conversation difficult.

CA> The Inet usenet groups as a counter culture to FIDO and pros
CA> and cons of same is certainly relevant to an "Internet"
CA> echo but I can see you're not comfortable discussing this
CA> in public.

SM> I don't have any problem with discussing it in public.
SM> Actually, I'm probably not well enough versed in it to
SM> offer an opinion...but that's never stopped me before (g).

You know a great deal more than I do since I don't acccess
    usenet at all. 8)

SM> I read usenet conferences long before I had internet access
SM> through the Cleveland Freenet. Freenet carried usenet and
SM> bitnet conferences a long time ago. I was underwhelmed
SM> then, and remain so!

I only wish Michigan was that progressive. I was impressed that
Ohio would do that for it's citizens.

CA> SM> Ok, Charles, I'll freely admit it...I'm an old fuddy
CA> SM> duddy!

CA> No I don't think that at all. I'm not 'young' myself and I
CA> share your preferences I'm just a bit more philosophical
CA> about it I guess?

SM> You're probably more knowlegable about it, and less
SM> opinionated. But I really am an old fuddy duddy!

It's hard to claim to be more knowledgeable when the 'learning
curve' is only a month or two. I've repeated the process many
many times but repitition is not knowledge. 8)

We're probably both a bit 'fuddy' but I'm not sure about the
    'duddy' part.
