Leave it at the normal default (%c3 on modern units),
so data compression and error correction are enabled.
There is an exception to this. If you are transferring
SMALL data volumes per session (under 1k, and best if
under 256 bytes) and you're using a solid protocol (Z-Modem
or something equal), I would suggest FORCING a 2400bps
non-error correcting connection when calling long-distance
(esp. if you have 6 second billing). The reason if that
it takes several seconds to hand-shake for V.32/bis, VFC
and V34, and a couple of extra seconds to setup error
correction (call it 25 seconds of wasted billing time,
which is likely padding a little). With a 2400 (240cps)
non-error correcting connection the setup time and
the time required to move 1k of data should be under
20 seconds...may be under 12 seconds if all goes well.
If you're moving larger data volumes (say anything over
5k), then the raw carrier speed and compression are in
your favor to use...5k of average text on a 33.6k carrier
with a 115.2k serial port rate should take less than 1
        second to transfer.
