My stepfather was in the Navy for 22 years. He was aboard the USS Tangier
anchored about fifty feet away from the USS Utah in Pearl Harbor on the
morning of December 7th, 1941, when the Jap planes arrived and started their
bombing runs.

My stepfather's AA gun crew shot down two of the three Jap planes the Tangier
destroyed.

The Utah was hit and ultimately went bottoms-up.

From there he took part in the battle of Coral Sea, the battle of Midway,
several amphibious assaults ferrying Marines ashore under heavy Jap fire
during various taking of islands.

He had several medals, including two Purple Hearts.

When he retired from the Navy, he was a First Class, got his hard-earned
retainer check from the Navy each month, and went to work at the California
First Bank until he retired.
