Acclaim's Million-Selling Turok Only 3rd-Party Title Chosen for
Nintendo 64 'Players Choice' Series; Turok: Dinosaur Hunter Joins
Nintendo Mega-Hits at $39.95 SRP
GLEN COVE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 7, 1998--Acclaim Entertainment,
Inc. (NASDAQ: AKLM), a leading worldwide interactive entertainment
company, today confirmed that Turok: Dinosaur Hunter for N64 is one of
seven hit titles to make up Nintendo's new 'Players Choice' series,
which will feature a reduced suggested retail price of $39.95 and
special gold-trimmed packaging as of January 26.
A Nintendo of America press release announced the program Monday,
describing the Players Choice titles as "America's favorite video
games," representing seven of the top ten sellers in the country for
all of 1997. Turok joins the Nintendo-published titles Super Mario 64,
Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64, Cruis'n USA, Wave Race 64 and Star Wars:
Shadows of the Empire on the prestigious list.
Turok is the only licensed N64 Players Choice game to date,
emphasizing Acclaim's leadership as a N64 developer. Acclaim now
commands a 17.3 percent dollar share in the N64 software market,
compared to an 8.6 percent share for the closest competitor, according
to a Jan. 5 CIBC Oppenheimer report based on November 1997 TRSTS
industry data.
"Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is a blockbuster hit for the N64, taking
advantage of the power of the system," said Howard Lincoln, chairman,
Nintendo of America Inc. "Its consumer popularity and stellar sales
performance made it an important title to include in the Players Choice
series."
Turok entered the gaming marketplace with a bang on Turok Tuesday,
March 4, 1997, selling out at many retail outlets within its first
weeks on sale, and commanding the top third-party title spot on US and
European sales charts through most of 1997. Turok also debuted as the
number one N64 title in Japan on May 30. The game has remained a hot
rental title, ranking among the top five domestic rentals, throughout
1997.
"We're extremely proud that Turok is now a 'hall-of-famer' among
N64 games, joining Nintendo's own most popular titles on a list of the
highest quality games available for any system," said Paul Eibeler,
general manager of Acclaim North America. "Selection for the Players
Choice series will bring Turok to a new audience of gamers, in turn
paving the way for our Turok sequel, due later in 1998."
