Did I ever tell the story of Fiona cockatiel and the bookcase? No? Well,
sit down with a tall glass of iced tea... Way back when we had only
lived in this house about 6 months, I had a clutch of baby tiels. Fiona
was a cinnamon-pearl hen, the eldest of two such in that clutch. I
always allow my babies to learn to fly before I clip them the first
time. I ALWAYS close all the doors to every room, so the babies can only
fly in the living room/dining room/hallway "T" area. Welllllll, one day
I forgot to close the computer room/library door. Fiona was out of the
cage on a free-flight. She whipped into the computer room and never came
out.
I ran into the room calling her. I could hear her chirping, as from a
distance, but I couldn't see her. Then it dawned on me... In this room
are two 8' tall bookcases, pushed together in the corner of the room.
They meet at their front edges, and create an 8' tall "chimney" behind
the back corners. Fiona had tried to land on top of the bookcases, and
had slid over the back edge into that "chimney". She had fallen down the
12" wide opening and couldn't spread her wings enough to fly back up it.
Now, these bookcases are made of two stacked pieces. I began throwing
books out of the topmost case of one stack--into the hallway, onto our
bed, all over the floor; anyplace, to get them out so I could remove the
top case. It was early July, and it was about 90 degrees. Fiona was
whimpering like a puppy; I was crying and sweating. I finally got the
top case empty and dragged it off the bottom one out into the hall. With
it gone, I could barely reach over the edge of the other one into the
hole, and touch Fiona. I think I finally got her out of there by
grabbing her tail--I don't recall. All I remember is that she was
covered with dustballs and VERY angry.
I immediately grabbed the scissors and clipped her wings. At that point,
my husband came in and asked "What did you do with YOUR day, honey?". I
should probably simply report that he survived my reply... Now when
I let babies fly, I not only close all the doors, but I put a board
across that opening between the bookcases...just in case.
And THEN, there was the time another baby tiel got caught between the
side of the fridge and the wall, 1/2-way down, wings folded up above her
head...but that's another (long) story for another time!
So don't feel bad about Princess and the fridge--you're not alone!
