Hmm...my suggestion...do a FULL minimal install, restoring ONLY the CTL files 
and batchfiles, re-silt and give it a shot. I've found, also, that installing 
into a DIFFERENT directory than you were originally in (ie MAX2 instead of 
MAX or something like that) solved some problems of this nature for me...I've 
never had this EXACT problem, but similar problems... :)
