The DAO is strictly double action only -- you cannot cock it.
The "decocker" version is double action on the first shot only -- after
wards, the slide rides over the hammer and cocks it for each shot.
Applying the "decocker" drops the hammer (safely) and is used in lieu of
a safety.
Now, is this strictly a carry gun? Do you have experience in double
action shooting (or are you willing to learn)? If so, the decocker may
be what you want.
If you consider this a "general purpose" gun, and want to do plinking
and so on with it, the decocker may be better -- you can thumb-cock it
and shoot it single action the first shot.
Of course, if you want a REAL gun, go with an M1911A1 from Colt or
Springfield -- in .45 ACP, naturally. :-)
