Not morally superior, just smarter.  Volunteers got a better chance at training
and basically staying out of harm's way.  Plus we got to sleep in a real bed in
a real building (most of the time) and get hot meals on a fairly regular basis 
(FWIW, in those days Army chow was a couple of orders of magnitude better than
the slop the AF was serving; I had the choice of eating in the Army chow hall
6 miles away at Torii Station - which I did most of the time - or the AF chow
hall across the street from the barracks, so I do have a basis for comparison - and
the difference was most certainly worth the trip).

Other than the two months I spent at DaNang and the week or so I spent in basic
and jungle survival schools I got to sleep in a building.
