in the pascal world, or the Borland Pascal world, everything was done by
the borland compiler... borland had two flavors of its pascal
environment... one was the simple less expensive Turbo Pascal and the other
was their full featured and costly Borland Pascal... the turbo flavor used
"turbo" for the editor environment and one could compile manually
from the commandline with "tpc"... the borland flavor used
"bpc" for its compiler... there was no preprocessor or macro
stuff like the C world has... it wasn't needed... one simply wrote their
code and compiled it...

this is also seen in the Free Pascal world... however, the additional steps
are done like in the C type world... FPC compiles to an object file which
is then linked to an executable...
