The Ultimate Tone... around $55 from AES.

Not at all... a bass player needs three to six times the power the the
guitarist to have the same perceived volume. Our high frequencies cut
through a lot better. Seriously, a good 50 watt circuit will do the job just
fine and you won't go deaf getting into output distortion. If you NEED more
than 50 watts, you're running your stage volume too high. 100 watt amps may
have a little more in the "balls" department, but 50 will do the job.
Again... the warning on the old Fender circuits... these are loud and clean.
They ran the B+ levels too high (FAR above spec) and biased the tubes back
down on the cold side so they wouldn't explode. Some old Fender 6V6 amps run
the plates in excess of 500v... AES will not even sell you a NEW 6V6 if they
know it's going into an old Fender... they max out absolutely at around 400v,
and that's pushing it. The higher plate voltage allowed more headroom, but
delayed the onset of clipping. They've practically gotta be on 10 before
there's a hint of distortion.
C-ya! Rich
