Hi John!
-> How the hell did I end up with crickets when we started with sub
-> crossovers??? Sorry.
Hehe! Every bit of it was interesting reading, too. I'm just hoping for
an opportunity to visit Pheonix so that I can come check out the results
of all of your pondering and fussing and fixing!
-> For the world of me I have yet to figure out any possible advantage
-> of a small slope. I did read one gentlemans post on the Internet
-> (RAHE) where he spoke of have two filters/crossovers in the loop at
-> both the preamp and on the powered sub itself.
-> Both were of a moderate to higher value and he believed that these
-> two in combination were muffling the sub output and generating an
-> unpleasant effect from the sub. I don't remember the exact specs,
-> but believe one was a 24.
Putting filters in series to get a higher cutoff slope without some of
the problems of a steep slope in getting it all in one filter is a valid
way or doing things.. worst disadvantage is added noise from additional
filter stages, but for a subwoofer this could work well.
-> Depending on the frequency of the two, I
-> can see where some problems "could" be created by this setup and
-> myself wouldn't want two of anything in a loop. (Just like running
-> two surge suppressors in line with one another)
While normally I might agree with you on this, Dolby C works much this
same way.. two Dolby B circuits basically in series with different
"frequency slopes".
-> It just makes it too difficult to hunt down problems. I took my
-> external crossover unit out of line when I began using the powered
-> sub, even though I am certain my external crossover was of a higher
-> quality and my sub has an adjustable crossover.
I follow your thinking, that the sub's crossover would be "ideally set"
from the factory, but then, is there anything keeping the lows from
going to your mains, too? Perhaps you might want to roll off the bass
going to your mains which can be responsible for a lot of
intermodulation distortion problems.
-> I bought both my center channel and sub from the same manufacturer as
-> my main speakers and have been extremely pleased with the results,
If the match with your main speakers is a planned thing, then this is
good, and probably you have it set up right according to the
manufacturer's recommendations. As you know, being from the same
manufacturer is no gaurentee of matching anything much of the time.
BTW, I've also been a Dave Brubeck fan for a long time. I've played many
of his pieces in off the wall time signatures from his "Time" series of
albums.
