U.S ORIGIN HISTORIC ARMS IMPORT "FIX" REMAINS "UNFIXED"
The first session of the 105th Congress ended without
resolution to the problem of the U.S. State Department denying
firearms import permits for such firearms as M-1s and M-1
Carbines eagerly sought by collectors. In the closing days,
Representative Alan Mollohan (D-WV), ranking Member of the
Commerce, State, and Justice Appropriations Subcommittee,
tirelessly worked to insert language into the final bill
requiring the State Department to stop impeding lawful imports of
U.S. origin firearms. Unfortunately, a workable agreement wasn't
reached, although the final bill does direct the State Department
to report to Congress regarding their non-approval of firearm
import permits. Please continue to contact your Representative
and ask him to urge the State Department to obey the law. Also,
call Congressman Mollohan at (202)225-4172 to let him know gun
owners appreciate and support his continued efforts on our
behalf. Congressman Hal Rogers (R-Ky) also deserves thanks, as
he too was very supportive throughout the process.
Gun owners should also note the continued anti-Second
Amendment pursuits of Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ). He
continues his efforts to pass more restrictive legislation aimed
at lawful gun owners. The Senator attacks gun owners on the U.S.
Senate floor, where he misinforms, disinforms, and distorts the
truth.
THE BIGGER CLINTON GUN BAN - UPDATE
It appears that President Clinton's Executive Directive to
prohibit the importation of foreign-made firearms, legal by
standards of his 1994 Gun Ban, may be implemented as soon as this
weekend. Several national newspapers reported today that Clinton
seems primed to impose his directive as soon as Saturday,
November 15th. White House spokesman Michael McCurry even
suggested that the administration might recommend that BATF
freeze import license applications already granted and approved.
"We think it's wise not to process some of these licenses that
are out there," McCurry explained, illustrating just how far
Clinton-Gore will go. Expect a follw-up report next week after
the directive is issued.
              ELECTION VOLUNTEER COORDINATORS WANTED
They may seem like a long way off, but in reality, the 1998
elections are rapidly approaching. As you know, NRA-PVF has
successfully helped elect over 80% of our endorsed candidates to
office in the past two election cycles. The reason for our
success has been members like you. NRA members nationwide
organized early and continued to work through Election Day to
elect committed , pro-gun lawmakers, and we know that with your
help the success rate will continue in 1998. Election Volunteer
Coordinators (EVCs) act as the liaisons between NRA members and
gun owners in their districts and the campaigns of pro-gun
candidates. EVCs work directly with both the campaign and fellow
NRA members to provide critically-needed volunteer support from
the gun-owning community. In a future issue of NRA magazines,
the EVC's name and phone number will appear along with a message
encouraging area members to contact the EVC to help elect pro-gun
candidates. NRA-ILA recruitment of EVCs for 1998 is underway.
If you are interested in volunteering to become the EVC in your
congressional district, or want more information, please call the
NRA-ILA Grassroots Division at 1-800-392-8683.
