bb> Ok, so how is this 56K gonna work?
bb> Is it for just to call ISP's? Or can I dial up Frank's BBS and
bb> connect at 56k if we both have the capability?
56K X2 or K56Flex modems come in two "flavours" - client and server.
The server modem must connect to the telco system using digital lines
while the client connects using the standard telco analogue lines.
Server modems can send data at up to 56kbps, client modems can
_receive_ data at up to 56kbps, but _send_ data at no more than 33.6.
The technology will work _only_ if there is no more than one digital
to analogue conversion between the server and the client, and will
not work at all if there is an analogue to digital conversion.
That's why it's one-way at 56K.
BBS systems that meet the requirements and operate server modems
would permit you a 56K connect, as will ISPs.
