RW>>> Heard about the O'bama's firing of Inspector General, Walpin?
RW>>> (Inspector was because he didn't have any faith in him. According to
RW>>> legislation passed last year, he can't do that.

 ...

RW> Oh, it isn't bad news, per se'...it's interesting because
RW> O'bama needs the permission of Congress to fire any
RW> IG...they're protected from such political manuevers in
RW> order to keep them from being intimidated. O'bama must give
RW> Congress a 'good' reason for wanting to fire him and
RW> Congress decides on whether or not the IG will be let go or
 RW> not.

From what I have found on it, the president has to give 30 days
notice, and a reason. I saw nothing about congress approving the
firing. In fact, I did find the original bill considered by
congress required the president to cite certain specific
grounds, but that provision was removed at the request of GW
Bush. He said it would tie his hands in such matters.

RW> The reason this particular IG was under O'bama's scrutiney
RW> was because this guy was investigating the Mayor of
RW> Sacramento and his misuse of election funds, etc.. O'bama
RW> got into it because that major is a friend of his, a former
RW> NBA star, Kevin Johnson. Since the IG is white, it'll
RW> probably come out as racist. BTW, Walpin is a former US
RW> Attorney who has prosecuted a lot of cases such as this.

Of course the fact that the Bipartisan board that supervises
Americorps unanimously requested that Walpin be replaced doesn't
seem to matter. That and the republican bush appointed acting US
attorney for the district complained that Walpin interfered in
the Johnson investigation, withheld evidence, and tried the case
in the press should matter also.

Then consider that Bush replaced the inspector general holding
the same slot when he took office, with no more reason than he
wanted to appoint someone else. Reagan fired 15 inspectors
general 2 days after taking office, for no more reason than he
 wanted someone else.

Finnally, Obama complied with the requirement of 30 days notice
by suspending Walpin, with pay, pending the 30 days, after which
 he is fired.
