Instaed of useing ATZ use AT&F.  The problem might be your modem if your mates
works fine yours should sometimes they have buggy code...but I am no expert
I had a similar problem with a mates modem I brought me spare over and 
tested it and  it worked fine just that the modem he had was sick.
