Which is why most employers have terminated employees escorted off
the premises at the time of termination.

That might not hold for those being laid off.  When CSO had its massive
layoffs in 2004 most employees had at least 30 days warning - and a
very generous severance package (I drew full pay for 4.5 months after
leaving and half pay for 4.5 months after that).
