To: Multiple recipients of list TEXTPHONE
The base for integration of text telephony with other data comm and telecomm
is now founded.
As you see from the letter attached, some important components are now fully
approved:
V.8 bis that is the base for a reliable call connect procedure and also for
selection of level of service and higher layer protocols. Now it is time to
refine how it should be used in conjunction with V.18 . A group is just
formed to discuss how it should be applied together with V.70 and I think it
would be valuable to participate in that discussion.
V.25 ter is the modem control interface ("AT-commands") also including a
specification of how a V.18 modem should be controlled.
V.61 and V.70 are both simultaneous voice and data modem methods that
together with H.324 form a set of opportunities for simultaneous voice and
text that likely will attract a lot of new users to text telephony. We
should form a strategy here, which one to concentrate on! H.324 has a point
in its clear connection to other multi-media services.
V.80 is the mechanism to tell the application using the modem about events
during the data session. Embedding status reports from the modem in the data
stream. I think we should book a place for the V.24 cirquit 135, "Line
energy present", that can give our users the important visual clues about
the status on the line.
V.18 was not mentioned because it was a modification to an existing
recommendation. Therefore it does not need to go through the letter ballot
procedure.
