Layton urges Ottawa to scrap corporate tax cuts

Canadian Press

(Halifax) The leader of the federal New Democrats is asking Canadians what
they'd do with an extra $4.4-billion.

Jack Layton visited Halifax on Saturday and continued to call on Ottawa to
scrap billions in corporate tax cuts and reinvest the money in community
programs. Layton has been touring the country asking Canadians how they'd
rather see the tax cut money spent. He spoke with various community groups
and said he would put their solutions into a plan for budget discussions
and the expected spring federal election.

The NDP said it's hoping Prime Minister Paul Martin will announce a
reinvestment in community programs when he delivers his speech from the
throne on Monday. "People here in Nova Scotia are very concerned about
ten years of cuts to services and huge corporate tax cuts", Mr. Layton
said. "They've made many suggestions of how even just a few dollars
could be used so effectively."

David Hade of the Canadian Federation of Students said the money could go
towards reducing tuition and establishing a grant program. Mr. Hade said
Canadian student debt is among the highest in the world. Mr. Layton accused
Mr. Martin of putting the country's debt on the shoulders of Canada's
students.
