Although only anecdotal, I too have a friend with a Netcomm Roadster which
seems poorly compatible with many BBS. Its not the line as my Spirit Viper
punches thru with a 28.8 connect every time at his place. Similarly, his
modem sucks at my place. This is despite 2 returns to Netcomm service. The
sad thing is that I advised him to get the Roadster based on anecdotal
evidence as well.

You may be suffering from that common technician malady of "user is
always wrong and must be a moron" ... he might be, but don't assume
it. One assumes (hopes) that Andrew is citing a reproducible case of
Netcomm-Banksia incompatibility that doesn't occur with connects to other
modems.
If not ... then he is a moron !
