Most people prefer to get in and out of a driver as quickly as possible
so that there is minimal interaction/cancellation between drivers,
however, the problem with filters is that the more slope you give it on
cutoff, the center frequency of the filter tends to start getting a huge
peak which can cause ringing and other colorations. Digital filters can
get around this, though, but most crossovers are still in the analog
realm.
Usually the best compromise between a sharp slope, colorization/ringing
around Fc and interaction between drivers is about 12dB per octave.
