EV> The Motor Shaft is the only part of the HDD that can rust, isn't it?

it is jokingly called "spinning rust" because the stuff on the
platters that holds the magnetic field is iron oxide or similar just like
the stuff on reel-to-reel and cassette tapes ;)

EV> HP placed in their computer and place two 1GB sticks in those slots?

ahhhh... you're using a 32bit OS so no, adding more than 3Gig likely won't
do anything for you...

EV> Another idea I'd like to learn about is that I've read that a AMD
EV> 4800+ CPU could be put in the 3800+ slot in this pc. Would I have to
EV> change the Clock Crystal if I did that?

there is no clock crystal like there used to be yonks ago... at least not
anything that we can deal with...

EV> I haven't checked, but I'd guess the price for 1GB DDR 400 RAM sticks
EV> and a AMD 4800+ CPU (because they are "old technology")
wouldn't hurt
 EV> my wallet much.

for ~$500US, one can get a very nice 8-core system with 16Gig of RAM and
assemble it themselves... case and all with a 500W or larger power supply
and a 1TB hard drive with a DVD reader/writer...

EV>>> I was thinking having a larger paging file would stop Firefox from

EV> I send Crash Reports to Mozilla every time one pops up on the screen

the problem here may be that they are not doing anything because you're
running an old TBird on an unsupported, EOLed OS... have you actually gone
to the mozilla bug tracker and looked to find your reports and what their
resolution is?

[chomp]

ml>> i would probably have tried to replace it with a metal spring but
ml>> some assemblies don't allow for that level of repair...

EV> The spring and button are one piece of plastic.

EV> The 'spring' portion is a flat wavy pattern that is about one inch

EV> I took photos of the broken part, so I'll send one or two pictures to
 EV> Your Email address.

ok...
