=-> Quoting LORNE MURPHY to MARTIN RIDGLEY:
LM> ...fair enough. Plenty of people agree with you here. Not me
LM> though :) I do like Moraz, but he wasn't around long enough or
LM> for enough material to have outdone Wakeman... i.e. if he were
LM> on GftO, for example, I could use that point....did that make sense?
Yup. I think Moraz's style suited the band better than Wakeman's did.
It sounds to me as if he's more of a team player than Wakeman was.
Moraz seems to listen to what's going on around him and his playing
supports and enhances what the other musicians are doing.
LM> He's only on _Relayer_. Oh, and _Yesshows_, just a poorly compiled
LM> live album. You're not missing anything there.
Now that I think of it, I believe I heard _Yeshows_ some years ago and
decided I didn't need it. ;-)
MR> as well as Bruford's (I'm a long time fan of his), and as you say,
MR> the songs are superb!
LM> Same deal here, Bruford ranks high in my fav drummers list.
FWIW, he and Moraz have done a few albums together - just the two
of them. Really interesting stuff.
LM> I've seen a decent amount of cut-hole Moraz albums, especially
LM> _Future Memories_, _FMII_, _Story of I_, _Patrick Moraz_ and one
LM> other which I can't recall the title of. I found a copy of
LM> _Coexistence_, which he plays on (with Syrinx), but the album was
LM> scratched, so I didn't pick it up, though it would be a great gem
LM> for my vinyl collection.
Hmmm.... I've never seen that one. But yeah, a lot of his albums were
almost instant cut-outs/deletes. I've picked up several including:
1) A 2nd copy of _Story of I_ (1976)
2) Out in the Sun - (1977)
3) Patrick Moraz - (1978)
4) Future Memories: Live - (1979)
5) Future Memories II - (1984)
I've also collected:
6) Refugee - (1974)
7) Music for Piano and Drums - (1983 - Moraz/Bruford),
8) Timecode - (1984)
9) Flags - (1985 - Moraz/Bruford)
10) Human Interface - (1987)
LM> As far as Wakeman goes, I've found *tons* of his stuff on vinyl,
LM> and though most of it is atrocious, it's necessary for the
LM> completist like me. :)
Hehehe... I know the feeling! I'd like to complete my Moraz collection
so if you (or anyone reading this) know(s) of any other Patrick Moraz
albums, please let me know! It would be greatly appreciated.
MR> I suppose I am in the minority among the critics and Yes fans alike
MR> in saying that I never really liked _Fragile_ all that much.
MR> However, I *did* quite like it's follow-up, _Close to the Edge_.
LM> I don't like _Fragile_ as an *album*, but the individual songs are
LM> strong (the main ones, not the little solo pieces....
LM> THe album doesn't flow properly, somehow.
Maybe that's it. Yeah, there are some good pieces on it, but I can't
listen to it as an album.
LM> _CttE_ is great, of course. "And you and I" is among the strongest
LM> stuff they ever did, IMO.
I agree. That piece alone is easily worth the price of an album!
MR> ...after _Going for the One_ and _Tormato_, I turned off them.
LM> So really, you've only missed _Drama_ and _Yesshows_, as far as
LM> pre-_Big Generator_ stuff. And believe me, you haven't missed
LM> anything from that later era. _Drama_ is great, though.
Is it really? That was the first one without Jon Anderson wasn't it?
I never heard it, but my impression was that the band was going rapidly
downhill and that the injection of Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes from the
Buggles was kind of a last ditch attempt to re-vitalize the band. I *do*
like Trevor Horn's production of the Buggles and of Yes's _90125_, though.
I was going to check out _Big Generator_ simply because I liked some of
the _90125_ album, but never got around to it for whatever reasons.
Hmmmm.... well, as I said, if I can find them cheap in a used CD shop
or something, maybe I'll check out _Drama_ and _BG_....
Cheers,
Martin
