SD> Washington is wonderful! But the rainy season is starting soon-- we'll
SD> have grey skies for the next 7 months or so, so if you're used to
SD> sunny California weather this may not be the place to park. (Did I
SD> say enough to dissuade MORE people from moving here?)
Hehe.. reminds me that one of my friends in Seattle told me that the only
thing he didn't like about Seattle is that there were too many /Californians/
there. Of course then I had to remind him that he too used to live in the
Golden State.. something he was trying to forget, apparently. :(
SD> WA is friendly to hs'ing, but I'm sorry to say I don't know a lot of
SD> specifics. My daughter is still seven and here you don't HAVE to sign
SD> a declaration of intent until the child is eight.
Here, we have to make things official when the child is six or in first
rade.
Kindergarten is the only grade that isn't manditory.
SD> There are some restrictions on parental teaching skills. There's a list
SD> of criteria. One of them is having 6 or 8 semesters of college.
SD> Another is taking one course on teaching for hs'ing parents. (I'm an RN
SD> so I have the semesters in-- therefore I'm not real clear on the other
SD> qualifying criteria.) If you don't meet this, I believe you have to
SD> have a teacher supervising your family.
I've probably got plenty of college semesters..
SD> I'm sure glad you had a nice time here. The NW is a beautiful part of
SD> the country!
It really was a wonderful adventure. :)
SD> Tell me again about your name and what it means. I think I remember it
SD> is Arabic.
Yes, Zaynab is a very common and ancient Arabic name. It is the name of a
fragrant herb that grows in that region. I don't know what that herb would
e
named in our country... wish I knew. The prophet Muhammad named his first
daughter Zaynab; two of the women He married later in His life were named
Zaynab. Also one of His grandaughters, a child of Fatima, was named Zaynab.
However, the Zaynab I am named after was a martyr of the Babi Faith who gave
her life in Persia in the 1850's after disguising herself as a man so that
she could fight to try to protect other Babis from persecution. I don't
know how other people pronounce it, but I put the emphasis on the first
syllable: ZAYnab.
