I have to differ with you about that. There are plenty of people who CHOOSE
to do most of their local travel by bike, such as trips to the grocery store,
bank, etc. I do it a lot, myself. I mean, there are different kinds of
"serious". I realize that you meant cyclists-as-athletes, but the point I'm
trying to make is that there are other people who ride bicycles for other
reasons just as serious. A bicycle is not ONLY a piece of sports equipment,
though it is that, too. Millions of people in China know this (and that's
only in one city!). I know, they have no other transport other than public
buses, but many would still rather ride than be crammed into a bus.
