subject: Sub Bass & Direction

Ref: Steep Crossover Slopes vs. 6 to 8 db Slopes
For the world of me I have yet to figure out any possible advantage
of a small slope. I did read one gentlemans post on the Internet (RAHE)
where he spoke of have two filters/crossovers in the loop at both the
preamp and on the powered sub itself.
Both were of a moderate to higher value and he believed that these
two in combination were muffling the sub output and generating an unpleasant
effect from the sub. I don't remember the exact specs, but believe one was a
24. Depending on the frequency of the two, I can see where some problems
"could" be created by this setup and myself wouldn't want two of anything in
a loop. (Just like running two surge suppressors in line with one another) It
just makes it too difficult to hunt down problems.
I took my external crossover unit out of line when I began using the
powered sub, even though I am certain my external crossover was of a higher
quality and my sub has an adjustable crossover.
I bought both my center channel and sub from the same manufacturer as
my main speakers and have been extremely pleased with the results, including
electing not to use the external crossover in line with the subs crossover.
The sub recently under went a manufacturers upgrade and later modification
that doubled the current and incresed the wattage sufficiently to take it
from accurate AND polite that was suited more to music than Home Theater
(music being my first concern)....to..... complete adjustability that allows
a musicality (yep, not just thump thump) for stereo reproduction and an
absolute MONSTER for Home Theater apps when dialed up. It is the first I have
heard that actually gives me the best of both worlds. Although I have read a
review of the Brown Bag 18" powered sub and one other that slips my mind at
the moment, that deliver on the same promise. The Brown Bag has the handy
feature of a remote to switch between the two levels. But I doubt that I
would ever want another remote just for that.
So many of the subs are still stuck in the mobile auto design of subs
being a one note thumper, that even some of the big names have lost any hint
of musicality(sp?). While most audio enthusiasts are more interested in "the
sound", I am more into "the music". I cannot sit and listen to DAT recordings
of crickets and frogs for a half hour and be entertained, regardless of how
accurate the recording. Give me a stringed quartet, Pink Floyd, Tori Amos or
Dave Brubeck any day!
How the hell did I end up with crickets when we started with sub
crossovers??? Sorry.
Cheers, John
