Ain't no dumb Questions about short wave. That old
radio if in working order is probably worth a lot.
I'd check around and see if I could get it appraised
though. That is if it still works. I think the reason 
that it may not be picking up anything for you is it
may need an antenna. there should be on the back a 
fitting or a screw to hook one up. Be careful when
you do because some of those old puppys can shock the
stuffins out of you. Unplug it first!!! 
Right now we seem to be in a bad time for short wave.
It runs in 11 year cycles and this cycle isn't going
very well on the upswing. It takes sunspots to make
the radio waves bounce off whats called the ionosphere.
No sun spots- no bounce. 
As to whats on shortwave, your in for a treat because
there is still plenty of broadcasts. Just tune in this
net and you should be able to find whats hot and whats
