subject: Cables & stuff ???

-> First, I must say that I recently replaced my old (original)
-> Monster Cable speaker cables with a pair of name brand, semi expensive
-> speaker cables. We set up a semi-blind test of these two and a third
-> and treble. So, at least with my system, and the music I listen to.....
-> there is a difference.
As you well know, there are those who say that, assuming there are no wild
variations in capacitance, resistance etc., cables have no sonic signatures,
and as you know, -I- am not part of that camp....I have heard obvious
differances between both line level and speaker level connections; the main
quantifier (IMHO) is the cost/performance ratio, and the fact that there are
"tweaks" out there who buy just to "buy".
-> To that end I have a question about the wiring inside the gear.
-> Is there a difference between multistrand wire and solid core wire of the
-> same diameter and insulation in conductivity and possible noise?
ould
-> rewiring the inside of an amp with a bigger and better
-> quality wire make a difference that one can hear?
-> Is there a difference between the old fashion pot metal binding
-> posts and the brass and gold plated ones of today...if the old ones are
-> clean? Is the less corrosive(sp?) nature of the gold plating the only
-> advantage?
There can be, but you start to get into diminishing returns; in general, the
pathways are quite short, so variance is less. More often than not, replacing
internal speaker wiring can give more "obvious" results than amp wiring, but
I see that level of construction getting better every day among the
manufacturers. As to connectors, gold mainly serves to diminish corrosion,
ut
there are arguments about that as well, such as dissimilar metals, junction
effect etc. There are hard-cores that wire directly from amp to speakers,
bypassing any physical connectors at all! Good clean, tight connections are
step 1. There are a variety of binding posts out there with differing
merits"
and designs; I've been happy with "standard" Pomona/Superior style 5-ways,
ut
I have played with some of the monster solid copper types, as well as the
combo, layered gas-tight styles as well...budget/performance being a major
factor in -my- decisions. I'm not convinced I've -heard- a differance, but I
-have- had less fiddling to do as far as staying tight/clean etc. goes.
