Subject: Re: ATM Probably dum beginners question
Regarding Goran's question about turned edge and masking. Turned edge can be
difficult, and masking is one way to deal with it. I think most atm's who get
into a turned edge situation should make some effort to polish it out before
giving up and masking. There is much to learn from fighting turned edge, and it
isn't as intractable as many have made out. Difficult? sometimes, but not
impossible. If I was working with a first timer, who had a good figure
except
for the edge, and who I was afraid might lose heart while fighting the turned
edge, then I would suggest masking right off the bat.

Good advice! It doesn't matter how good the adviser can get the edge, or
for that matter the rest of the surface. It is how good under the
conditions the one working the mirror can do. Many conditions affect the
way a lap works. Some are out of control of the mirror maker. Some could be
controlled if he knew how. And some he may know how but not realize need to
be controlled. And then remote advice leaves much to be desired. It can be
very difficult to put into words what seems so easy for an experienced
worker. Showing would be so much easier than telling.
When giving advice by e-mail to someone with no experienced worker
nearby to show him, it doesn't hurt to attempt to gage the frustration
level. Some just want to do good enough and are willing to mask off a
quarter inch of turned edge. And don't we all know it will be turned.
I would recommend working at a turned edge for a while. You may
learn to get it better. But be warned that you can work on it for a
lifetime. If you want to work on it that long, do it on mirrors number 2
and 3 and later ones.
