 It reallt depends on what time of the day/night I'm calling, but I

 average 3000/3600 bps (more for text files - 4000+).  And miraculously

 my init string is 'ATZ' :)  I don't know what your problem could be,

 give Telstra a buzz and ask them to test you line; it could be faulty.
