I'm guessing, but it sounds like you have the original Word 6.0 release. It 
was pretty buggy.  To confirm, pick the menu Help>about and check the version 
number.  Later versions are 6.0a and 6.0c.  6.0a is a downloadable patch and 
fixes the major bugs.  6.0c is a complete replacement which requires 
obtaining a set of diskettes from Microsoft. The shipping charge for the 
diskettes is about $5.00.
