Best thing to do is ask around locally so you will know what bike shops
you can rely upon and which are crooks. Especially when you are a novice
you will need to rely upon your dealer. First and foremost, get a bike
that fits you properly, and here, as a novice, is where you will have to
rely upon someone else's judgment.
You will have to decide what kind of configuration you want. Many novices
prefer the straight handlebars of an off-road bike, even if they always
ride on pavement; however, the dropped handlebars give you more hand
positions and are far more comfortable once you are used to them.
Good luck and enjoy yourself.
