-= Pete Replied to Dave Hatch about: Modem speed =-
G'day Dave
SA> I take it a SmartModem 288 is 28k8?, if so, what are you
SA> transfering, TEXT?..
PC> The latest Smartmodem 288[D] are 33k6, can't understand why
PC> Netcomm changed from their M34F badge name, Bit like Windows 95
PC> (another stupid name)
DH> Much the same reason - the manufacturer had a name that needed
DH> getting away from, since it had gained widespread recognition.
DH> (Not exactly _positive_ recognition - but recognition for all of
DH> that.)
My comment was more to do with the choice of model/version name not
the reasons for doing it, Had Netcomm changed their model designation
to 336[D] when their modems became capable of that speed then it would
have been fair enough and the question asked by SA above would never
have been asked. I take it no one has ever asked you about Windows 96
Dave. :-)
DH> Reasonable move. I gather that most of the defects of the
DH> product have now been remedied - necessary,
Well i've been connecting to a M34F with my Courier nearly every day
without problem for what seems like forever until last week when the
M34F was replaced with a 288D now every now and then the modems go
into an endless 'warble bonk' loop when that part of the V34 neg stage
is reached.
DH> or there has to be another name change again in 18 months or so
DH> when the Barnum effect supply of customers runs low.
Looks like there's a change a com'n in from the south pa. :-)
Pete.
